A paper factory and a Taipei university are working together to keep interest alive in carpentry. The cooperative arrangement not only improves vocational training but also demonstrates Taiwan’s skills in traditional crafts.

Students practice operating tools and cutting wood patterns in a study environment that is becoming increasingly rare. To prevent the disappearance of traditional carpentry, a paper factory cooperated with
National Taipei University of Technology to build a wood arts creativity center in Fengyuan, Taichung.

They have a good foundation there for doing carpentry. The best method is adding new elements to resources that existed in the past in order to restore former glory.

The factory gave more than 20,000 ping of land, where it converted an old factory into a cultural and creative center complete with machines and other facilities. The university provided instructors who will offer classes and graduate courses in the area of carpentry.

Carpentry in Taiwan is gradually disappearing. The only way to spark interest in carpentry among youths, so the art can be passed down, is by adding modern design elements.

The university has also signed a cooperation agreement with two furniture dealers. Designs produced at the wood arts creativity center will be sold at 140 retail outlets worldwide.
